Greetings from onboard MV Doulos Hope in the Philippines where we arrived exactly one month ago on October 1. There have been some special ministry opportunities including the Preachers’ Workshop which had more than 1/3 of the ship’s company sign up and attend. Between 2 typhoons, Malou was able to fly for a week to Batanes to help clean and tidy up her mother’s house.

Last Wednesday evening, we arrived back from a ministry tour to 3 African capital cities comprising 16 meetings. The vibrancy and energy of the African church is well known and while we often hear it described as a mile wide and an inch deep, that is not universally true. In their commitment to prayer and evangelism, the church there has much to teach those of us in the West. However, a sobering visit to the genocide museum in Kigale left me asking, ‘Are we learning anything from history?’ Tomorrow, we leave again for south Asia. We do not take for granted the ability and privilege to be able to do this. Thank you for the part you play by your encouragement, interest, prayers and support. The funeral of Mrs Margaret Bolton, Gareth’s Mum, took place soon after our return from the Philippines. A good number attended St Andrew’s church where one of Gareth’s cousins, Rev Andrew Loat, led the prayers and his brother, Tim Loat, gave the Bible reading. Four tributes were given from Gareth and Val (his sister), and by their respective spouses, Malou and Joe. Most folk then came to the village hall for refreshments. We will spend much of July based in Mum’s home in Dorset dealing with various matters while speaking each Sunday in different churches. Thanks for your many kind words. May God bless you all. Dear Friends, in the early hours of Tuesday May 7, and just a few weeks before her 101st birthday, my mother passed away in her bungalow in the Dorset village where she and my late father had retired 40 years ago. Although not totally unexpected, it was nonetheless a shock, and we immediately cancelled the short holiday in Scotland that Malou and I had been planning to start the following day. The funeral will be held on Wed June 26. Thank you for your many kind words by email and on Facebook.

We are currently in Manila, the Philippines, having just spent a few days in Vietnam. We fly to Cebu tomorrow for meetings in 3 churches and next week, we will visit some of Malou’s family on Batanes in the far north of the country. We are also spending time with three 3 AMEN partner ministries: CWTP, SIKATT and Grace Ministries.

Greetings from Dorset where the birds and the flowers are declaring spring has arrived although the weather is not so sure! This month we will visit Vietnam for the first time and then travel to the Philippines to speak at fellowships on three different islands. We will also meet with different AMEN partners plus Malou’s family – she has 2 sisters and 8 brothers and her mother is 88 years old. The Philippines is currently experiencing very hot weather. Greetings from cabin 705 on deck 7 of Logos Hope, currently berthed in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa. While Gareth visited other ships in the port where we could share our story and leave literature with the crew, Malou has spoken to many visitors on deck 4 using the painted wall illustrations that tell the parable of the Prodigal Son. On March 9, we fly the length of the continent to Tunis where I will be teaching in the ‘Timothy Bible School’ which has had to relocate from another country due to persecution. Unfortunately, the hot water system in the restaurant car has broken so we are unable to serve any hot drinks’. On a long train journey, that was not the news we wanted to hear. I waited a couple of hours and then decided to see if it was still broken. The lady behind the counter confirmed it was out of action saying, ‘it has died’. I asked if there was any possible hope of a resurrection! She laughed and said ‘no’. I said, ‘a resurrection can happen even three days’ later. Jesus’ death and resurrection changed my life when I was 18, 56 years ago!’ ‘You certainly look good on it’, she replied. ‘That’s kind of you to say so but while we all look at the outside, God looks at the heart’. ‘That’s true’ she said. ‘My friends are always going on about image. I get a bit tired of it.’ On returning to my seat, Malou gave me a John’s gospel she had. On going back to the lady in the dining car, I said ‘reading this changed my life when I was 18’. She was thankful and started reading it immediately, promising she would read it all. Was that one reason why the hot water system ‘died’ that morning?

A year marked by international instability and uncertainty has also been marked by significant church growth in some places, while the need to disciple believers has never been greater. Regarding Bolivia, one veteran worker wrote ‘Bolivia is a comparative latecomer to missions but it is encouraging to see that slowly but surely, churches here and there are starting to understand and are getting involved in it’.

Mary….sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said' (Luke 10:39). The original says 'Mary sat close to, near to, the Lord's feet'. The proximity and intimacy is doubly emphasised while 'sitting at someone's feet' is a humble place indicating an openness to hear and receive. We are not told that Mary spoke or even prayed - she just listened to the Lord speaking into her life. What might be the outcome of listening to Jesus – peace, refreshment, conviction, redirection, joy, provision etc. I don't know about you but I can think of few things more important in the unpredictable, noisy, fast moving, challenging and demanding world in which we live than to spend time listening to what Jesus is saying to us. Samuel had it right: 'Speak (Lord), for your servant is listening' (1 Samuel 3:10)

Greetings from Greece where I am speaking tonight for the last time to 40 guests with Oak Hall. We will look at 1 Corinthians 15:58, the verse inscribed in the Bible I was given by my college Christian Union on my 21st birthday - exactly 52 years ago today! With my mum reaching 100 years old in less than 2 weeks' time, it is birthday season yet with the sad death yesterday of Trevor, our former college CU president, it is a reminder that we need to redeem the time we have left since the future decreases at the same rate the past increases – a day at a time!

A week ago today, on April 14, George Verwer, the founder of OM entered eternity. Much has been written about him on social media and many tears have been shed by those who loved him and been influenced by him. In my case, it was encountering him in an international prayer meeting he ran each Tuesday in nearby Bromley that led me out of school teaching and opened doors around the world for ministry. It was on OM's ship MV Doulos that I met my Filipino wife, Malou and it was also where I felt compelled to do something about the many wonderful Christians I met in developing countries who lacked the resources to see their dreams and visions fulfilled. With little spare money and zero experience (yet great help from others), I started the charity AMEN: www.amentrust.co.uk

Greetings from Manila in the Philippines where less than a week remains of our 6 week visit to 3 countries. Unfortunately, we have been unable to visit Batanes island to see Malou's family due to flight cancellations because of bad weather.
